More funding for Bay recovery

More funding for Moreton Bay environmental recovery.

SEQ Catchments announced today that a second round of funding was available to assist groups, community organisations and Local Government to carry out further rehabilitation and restoration works associated with the March 2009 oil spill.

The company is seeking Expressions of Interest with regard to coastal restoration projects on Moreton Island, the Sunshine Coast and Bribie Island in areas that were impacted by the oil spill.

SEQ Catchments CEO, Simon Warner, said: “Following the success of Round One funding, we have developed partnerships with a variety of organisations, including Traditional Owners, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, the Department of Environment and Resource Management and volunteer community groups.

“Restoration works include revegetation, weed removal, dune stabilisation, pest management, erosion control, and monitoring of flora and fauna species,” he said.

As well as rehabilitating areas, the current projects also include engaging Traditional Owner elders to record historical, cultural and ecological knowledge in areas, building better relationships between scientists, trainee rangers and Traditional Owners.

The works, which will run until June 2010, will also provide advice to coastal management plans to build greater environmental resilience in coastal ecosystems said Mr. Warner.

The company is looking for Expressions of Interest to further expand the current programs to mitigate the impact of the oil spill.

The Expressions of Interest form and project guidelines are available to download from the SEQ Catchments web site: www.seqcatchments.com.au/LiteratureRetrieve.aspx?ID=58343

All Expressions of Interest must be received by Thursday, December 17, 2009.

December 1, 2009.
