The Planning and Innovation Program supports the community, industry, state and local government to achieve the targets in the South East Queensland’s Natural Resource Management (SEQ NRM) Plan, as well as the management of areas that provide ecosystem services.

The Planning and Innovation Program supports the community, industry, state and local government to achieve the targets in the South East Queensland’s Natural Resource Management (SEQ NRM) Plan, as well as the management of areas that provide ecosystem services.

SEQ Catchments looks forward to the next generation of natural resource management planning by seeking to integrate the SEQ NRM Plan and the internationally recognised

‘Ecosystem services (ES)’ is the term given to the goods and services provided by natural and semi-natural ecosystems that benefit, sustain and support the well-being of people. These include the production of food and medicines, the regulation of climate and disease, provision of productive soils and clean water, and landscape opportunities for recreation and spiritual benefits.  In short, ES are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems.
South East Queensland Ecosystem Services (SEQ ES) Framework into a single framework called the South East Queensland Natural Infrastructure Plan. This will provide a foundation to restore and enhance South East Queensland’s ecosystems in a way that supports the region’s economy and lifestyle. The aim of this single framework is to enhance the sustainability and resilience of the region by supporting the South East Queensland (SEQ) Regional Plan.  The SEQ Natural Infrastructure Plan will include innovative thinking and products based on the SEQ ES Framework, including maps illustrating the region’s natural assets that contribute to our community’s wellbeing and economic prosperity. This will facilitate the necessary planning and resource management to protect and enhance South East Queensland’s natural resources into the future.

SEQ Catchments has contributed to the production of two key documents to aid the integration of the SEQ NRM Plan and the SEQ ES Framework in local and state government planning:

  1. A guide to incorporating the SEQ Ecosystem Services Framework in Local Government Planning and Policy: Policy 4.3 - SEQ Regional Plan
  2. Implementing SEQ Regional NRM Plan Targets through Planning Schemes: A Decision Support Tool For South East Queensland Local Government Planners..
