The majority of SEQ is managed by private landholders, making biodiversity conservation on private land essential to maintaining our region’s natural values and ecosystem services.

Conservation partnerships options available in SEQ, include binding and non-binding voluntary agreements.

Non-binding agreements are available through the Land for Wildlife program. Land for Wildlife is a voluntary program that encourages and assists landholders to provide habitat for wildlife on their properties. In SEQ, Land for Wildlife is managed by SEQ Catchments and Local Governments.

Binding conservation agreements (conservation covenants) are legally attached to the title of a property and can cover all or part of a property. These statutory covenants aim to achieve the mutually beneficial protection, enhancement and management of biodiversity and play a key role in increasing the protected area network of SEQ. In SEQ, conservation covenants are administered by:

  • Local governments, as either temporary or permanent binding covenants on land title (contact your local Council for more information on options and support); and
  • the Department of Environment and Resource Management, as permanent binding covenants on land title, through the Nature Refuge program or voluntary vegetation declarations.

Visit our Land for Wildlife page to find out how you can get involved.
