GIS Mapping
SEQ Catchments’ Mapping Unit - Mapping what’s possible
Community greenspace includes all forms of publicly accessible open space such as beaches, waterways, Parks and Reserves, regional trails and private outdoor recreation facilities. In partnership with the Department of Local Government and Planning, Regional Landscape and Open Space Advisory Committee, mapping community greenspace allows us to better understand supply and demand of these areas.
New techniques and methods have been developed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform (ESRI Arc GIS) to generate better information sharing on landscape mapping in SEQ for improved natural resource management.
SEQ Catchments has extensive data sharing agreements with the Australian Government, State Agencies, local governments, industry and non-government organisations, creating a ‘data warehouse’ and the integration of available information.
This information is compiled into a range of mapping products to support strategic planning and on-ground works across SEQ.
Our unique network of professional and community members allows us to groundtruth and value-add to much of the information we receive.
The SEQ Catchments Mapping Unit has developed a high credibility among regional peers and are regularly consulted by a range of community and industry groups, and government departments.
Mapping South East Queensland’s Natural Resources
In South East Queensland, we have large amounts of information describing the environmental and natural resource assets of our diverse region. This presents both opportunities and challenges for mappers and planners. Initially, it was thought to be impossible to bring together the regions’ data sets, as they were spread over multiple agencies (as well as multiple departments within agencies) and organisations, and were presented in a complex mixture of scales and coverage.
The quality of work done by the SEQ Catchments team is outstanding. It has been presented at several very important global conferences, including the World conservation Congress in Barcelona in 2008, and the ACES (A Conference on Ecosystem Services) in Florida in 2009. I first encountered the work in Barcelona, and was so impressed with the concept, creativity and cartography that I followed up for more information. I quickly realized that this work is some of the finest in the entire field. In my opinion, the mapping team at SEQ Catchments has done the seminal work that the rest of us have been waiting for, and now they are in a position to bring this work to the global planning community as a “best practice” option.

- Mapping Ecosystem Functions for the SEQ Ecosystem Services Framework;
- The SEQ Natural Resource Management Plan Benchmark Atlas; and
- Producing up to a 1000 maps a year for community and government use.
The SEQ community now has access to a world class Geographic Information System that helps the region make better informed decisions.
Cost Recovery Service
SEQ Catchments can provide a ‘cost recovery service’ to meet your mapping needs. Specialty mapping projects are undertaken on a fee for service basis enabling SEQ Catchments to purchase imagery and data as required.
